読むボディワーク──「がんばる身体」をほどく、言葉のセッション

Eyecatch
Greetings, this is Terashima.

A gentle inquiry: what state is your body inhabiting right now?
Perhaps your jaw is subtly clenched, your breath barely grazing the surface, or a quiet tension hums deep within your shoulders?

In a world perpetually geared towards "Doing" – achieving, performing, perfecting – we often inhabit our bodies in a state of unconscious tension.
To gently release the grip of this "striving body" and reclaim the profound comfort of simply "Being" – of pure presence – we are embarking on a new journey.
This journey unfolds as a serialized column, delivered to your inbox: "Reading Bodywork."

A Gentle Deepening of Breath, As You Gaze Upon Your Screen

For 15 years, as a somatic artist and bodyworker, I have accompanied many individuals as their bodies unfold from within.
In that time, I've come to a clear understanding: the path to softening the body isn't solely through direct touch.
The moment one encounters an anecdote that gently eases the heart, or turns inward to notice their own subtle sensations, physical tension remarkably and spontaneously dissolves.
This "Reading Bodywork" is an intimate archive of words I have personally experienced and gently gathered from the tapestry of everyday life. Designed for those precious pockets of time within your busy days, these stories can be effortlessly absorbed on your smartphone, leaving you with a mysterious warmth blooming deep within your core.

  • The "clay bowling ball" I meticulously rounded, only to be met with laughter from my school teacher.
  • The two-month scalp treatment saga of an uncle, whose too-tight perm led to significant hair loss.
  • That rainy day at the Kamo River delta in Kyoto, dancing to the rhythms of djembe drums with strangers.
  • Seven minutes of uninhibited dance, utterly connected to myself, upon a 30-meter red carpet, under the gaze of a hundred eyes.
  • The family "mystery" I accidentally overheard in childhood, intertwined with the innocent voice of my mother through the receiver.

  • These narratives, seemingly born from the everyday yet profoundly resonant with the deep wisdom held within your body, will arrive in your inbox every other week.

Possibility Unfurls When We Release the Need for the 'Right Answer'

This column offers no rigid methodologies of "how to become healthy," nor does it exert any strong intention to guide (or control) you towards a specific destination.
In my own journey, whether painting, dancing, or engaging in bodywork, I've consistently found that the moment I strive to "do it well," I feel constricted. Yet, the instant I "release the outcome," I discover myself unfolding into a beautiful, unimagined future.
As you follow these words, simply allow your body to resonate like a finely tuned instrument. Just as a plant anchors its roots, befriending gravity, allow the full weight of your body to simply settle into your chair.
To re-center the "pure joy" that might have strayed beyond societal expectations, and place it firmly at your core once more. It would be my sincere pleasure to share such unhurried moments with you.
