We are deeply grateful for your continued warm support and presence within the Unfolding Bodywork community. This is Yasuhiro Terashima.

We are delighted to announce the publication of an academic paper (in English, a case report) on Zenodo, a global open-access repository. This paper encapsulates the essence of our practice and the unique methodology born from over 15 years of deeply engaging with the hearts and bodies of thousands.

Today, I wish to share a glimpse into the heartfelt intention woven into this paper and its very core.

The Limits of 'Healing,' and Reverence for the Journey We Have Lived

Since entering the world of bodywork, a profound question has always resonated within me. It is a question that Randolph Stone, the founder of Polarity Therapy, also confronted.

“Why is it that even when we temporarily 'remedy' physical imbalances and restore alignment, many individuals return, presenting with the same symptoms once again?”

Through this inquiry, a clear understanding began to emerge: the 'timeline of psychosomatic stagnation.'

The 'patterns of thought' (such as 'I must not,' or 'I must') ingrained during childhood by parents or our environment, create an internal friction with our authentic self—a 'conflict of emotions.' To avoid feeling the sadness and loneliness arising from this friction, 'behavioral defense patterns' are constructed. These patterns then become habitual as daily 'stagnation of the autonomic nervous system,' eventually solidifying physically over many years as 'muscular tension and postural forms.'

The form of our body is, in essence, the very history of the life journey we have traversed over a long time. Therefore, to intervene simply by saying, 'it is misaligned, so let us correct it,' is, in a profound sense, to judge and negate the very life path the individual has walked, labeling it as 'distorted.'

Unfolding Bodywork does not focus on 'fixing' (intervening with) the body. Instead, we embrace the body as it expresses itself, without judgment, surrendering to its innate intelligence, and simply waiting—allowing for change to unfold naturally, or not. This sacred space of 'non-intervention' and 'presence (Being)' is, we believe, the truly essential sanctuary for healing in our current world.

A Deeper Yearning: To Be Felt, Rather Than Merely Understood

In contemporary society, we exist within a world that values 'doing' (Doing) and 'achievement.' Here, both intervening and being intervened upon have become the accepted norm.

Yet, as living beings, humans possess a more fundamental yearning. It is a profound craving to simply 'be warmly felt' (Being Felt), rather than to be 'understood' (Understanding) by the intellect.

Merely by being touched, and having their own vulnerability and pain 'felt' by another, individuals experience profound healing. Touch, transcending words, conveys a direct message: 'Your presence is safe.'

By combining this non-interventive touch (tactile sense) with the habitual integration of our 'Unfolding Log' app—designed to cultivate daily awareness of mind and body—we have detailed in this paper a process where a transformative 'unfolding of being' (Unfold), rather than a temporary fix, arises spontaneously. This is supported by insights from cutting-edge neuroscience, including Polyvagal Theory.
