頭の考えが止まらない人へ。瞑想が苦手でも「身体の声を聴く」ことで訪れる深い静けさ

"Even when I get into bed, what happened today and my schedule for tomorrow keep racing through my head..."
"I'm constantly thinking about something, and my brain never gets a chance to rest..."

In today's information-overloaded world, an increasing number of people are suffering from this kind of "overthinking (mental hyperactivity)."

Have you ever tried "mindfulness meditation" or "zazen" to give your mind a rest, only to find that closing your eyes brought up even more random thoughts, making you give up and think, "Meditation just isn't for me"?

In reality, using your mind to "try not to think" in order to quiet your head (thoughts) is incredibly difficult.

In this article, we will explain the mechanism of how "listening to your body (a somatic approach)" can naturally fill your brain and mind with a profound stillness—something we especially want those who struggle with meditation to know.

---

1. Why won't your thoughts stop even when you try to meditate?

When meditation doesn't go well, it's not because you lack perseverance or have too many impure thoughts. It is simply due to how the brain and nervous system work.

The human mind (thought) is designed to constantly think about something. Especially during times of high stress or anxiety, the autonomic nervous system enters "sympathetic mode (fight/analyze mode)," and the brain goes into overdrive to think through things and prepare for potential trouble.

  • ❌ The trap of trying "not to think":
The very act of consciously trying to "erase random thoughts" or "think of nothing" becomes a type of "task" for the brain. As a result, the brain becomes even more excited, making it impossible to break free from the loop of thoughts.

When your head is overheating, stopping the attempt to control it with your mind and dropping the anchor of awareness into your "body (sensations)" becomes the simplest and most reliable solution.

2. Three reasons why "listening to the body" is effective for people who struggle with meditation

At Unfolding Bodywork, instead of sitting quietly and trying to control your thoughts, we value a somatic approach—directing your awareness to the subtle sensations of the body through the session.

Why does listening to the voice of the body directly connect to a quiet mind?

① You cannot "think" and "feel" at the same time

In terms of brain structure, different regions are used when you are using your mind for "thinking (language)" versus when you are feeling "sensations (touch and subtle movements)" in real time with your body.
When you are simply and gently feeling the "sensation of being touched right now" or the "microscopic waves inside your body," the brain's thinking switch naturally turns off.

② The nervous system senses "safety" and tones down

A racing mind is a sign that the nervous system is "tense and alert." When the body experiences true safety through Unfolding Bodywork’s gentle, non-controlling "listening touch," the autonomic nervous system switches to the "parasympathetic mode (rest and safety mode)." This fundamentally quiets the hyperactivity of the brain.

③ Suppressed emotions and stress drain away from the body

Unexpressed stress and "exertion" accumulate deep within the body, manifesting as muscle tension or shallow breathing. By listening to the body's voice and surrendering to the process where that tension "simply unfolds," the very causes that were troubling your mind are washed away from the body.

3. The difference between "Sitting Meditation" and "Unfolding Bodywork (Body-Centered Approach)"

Item General Sitting Meditation / Mindfulness Unfolding Bodywork
Approach Controlling your awareness through your own willpower Simply surrendering yourself to the practitioner's "listening touch"
Difficulty For overthinkers, random thoughts arise easily, making it difficult Since you receive sensations passively, anyone can enter deeply and easily
Change in State Concentration or effort is sometimes required As if being guided, you naturally drop into a "deep stillness"
Impact on Body Tension can sometimes develop from maintaining a posture All strain in the bones, muscles, and nervous system dissolves away

4. A time to rest the brain and reclaim the "sense of presence" of just being here

"My mind is always busy, and I don't know how to relax."
"I gave up on meditation, but I want to give my mind and heart an overwhelming sense of stillness."

For those who feel this way, an Unfolding Bodywork session is something we would love for you to experience at least once.

Sessions held at our quiet studio in Kyoto (Atelier Nae) can be received while fully clothed, simply lying down.

As the practitioner listens and attunes to the subtle voices of your body, thoughts fade from your inner world, replaced by a profound sense of security and a space of quietude where you are "simply existing comfortably right here."

It is not a meditation you work hard to achieve, but an exquisite relaxation that naturally "arrives" from the body.

Why not take a step back from the speed of daily life and gift your body and brain a true rest?

A process of turning off the mind's switch and returning to the body's inherent richness and stillness.
We look forward to welcoming you in a warm and safe space.
