【シリーズ1/4】考えすぎて眠れない夜に。脳のエネルギーを「手のひら」へ移すワーク

Eyecatch

"I find myself replaying unpleasant events from the day."

"Anxiety about tomorrow never ceases."

"My head feels hot, and my eyes are wide awake."

On such nights, we desperately try to "stop thinking." Yet, the more we try, the more the brain's energy accelerates, pulling us further from sleep.

Why "Not Thinking" Is Impossible

Our brain, especially the frontal lobe, possesses a nature to analyze, decompose, and comprehend things. It is, so to speak, a "master of fragmentation." Sleep, however, is fundamentally an act of surrendering to the "whole."

As long as we continue the "fragmenting work" of thought, the body cannot enter the "integrative process" of relaxation. The reason why the number of people suffering from insomnia doesn't decrease, no matter how much medicine and science advance, is because we are misusing the "tool of the brain."

You cannot persuade the brain into silence.

What is needed is to physically "relocate" the vast energy consumed by the brain to another place.

Engaging the Brain with "Sensory Processing"

At Unfolding Bodywork, we view the body as a precise "sensor."

When the brain is busy with thought, this sensor is dormant. Conversely, if you activate the sensor fully, the brain loses its "capacity to think."

The simplest gateway for this is the "palms of the hands," which occupy a remarkably large area in the brain's sensory map.

The Practice: Observing the Palm's "Static"

Igniting the Energy

While sitting or lying in bed, vigorously rub your palms together. Rub them earnestly for 30 seconds, until your hands become hot from the friction and you feel "I can't do this anymore."

Abrupt Halt and Energetic Discharge

Suddenly stop the movement and place your palms face up in a comfortable position.

"Listening" to Subtle Vibrations

Now, direct your full attention to the sensations occurring in your palms.

A tingling, prickling, fizzing sensation... Like the "static" on an old television, an ineffable, subtle vibration should be present.

Increasing Resolution

Do not end your observation with the thought, "It feels warm."

"How does the tingling at the fingertips differ from the tingling at the base of the thumb?" "In which direction are the waves of vibration flowing?"

Continue to pursue these "ineffable sensations" as if peering through a microscope.

When You Release the Urge to "Understand," Sleep Arrives

While engaged in this practice, your brain is fully dedicated to processing the "vast information streaming from your palms." In that moment, there is no remaining energy to analyze tomorrow's plans or past regrets.

Eventually, as the vibrations in your palms gradually subside, the heat in your once-frenzied brain will likewise diminish.

Try, just for a moment, to stop trying to understand "why you can't sleep."

Simply surrender your awareness to the "body's resonance" that is present, right here, right now.

In that moment, your "life force" will naturally unfold, guiding you towards profound rest.
