I refrain from uttering negative words that might wound myself. I cherish the perspective that there is no inherent positive or negative in things, only the recognition that "they exist." The profound impact of words on the body has long been an intuitive understanding for me.
Yet, just recently, I inadvertently found myself uttering the words, "I'm such a 'ponkozu' (useless/clunky)." To my astonishment, I felt a distinct sensation of energy subtly draining from my body. It was a clarity so profound, it almost made me chuckle.
And then, once again, I became profoundly certain: of just how directly the words we casually use, especially those directed at ourselves, influence our physical being.
Words: Potent Directives to the Body
Our brains struggle to differentiate between thought, words, and reality. Thus, the moment we articulate a word like "ponkozu," the brain interprets it as a powerful command—"you are 'ponkozu'"—and transmits this directive to the body.
- "Ponkozu" = "broken," "unable to move effectively"
A body thus imprinted with such a command genuinely endeavors to comply, resulting in a palpable loss of vitality.
This illustrates that the words we casually employ in our daily lives are, in truth, a potent, almost magical force that governs our physical condition and performance.
- Every time we vocalize "I'm tired," a genuine sense of fatigue intensifies.
- Each instance of declaring "I am clumsy" leads to a tangible stiffening and diminished ease of movement in the body.
Perhaps, through our own words, we are unknowingly applying brakes to our own bodies.
"Alignment of Word and Body": A Core Value at Unfolding Bodywork
This profound realization is deeply intertwined with the philosophy cherished by Unfolding Bodywork. We do not perceive discomfort manifesting in the body as inherently "bad," but rather prioritize the alignment between the state of the body and the mind.
We inquire whether there is a divergence between what the mind rationally accepts as "this is how it is" and what the body genuinely feels. It is precisely this misalignment that we believe gives rise to various forms of discomfort and imbalance.
And, by my recent use of the word "ponkozu," I experienced a process inverse to the usual: one where word and thought aligned, and this honesty manifested directly in the body.
That the body responded so candidly to words implies, conversely, that we possess the capacity to transform the body's state through our language.
"Why These Words?": Our Philosophy of Verbal Guidance
In Unfolding Bodywork sessions and classes, we place immense value on the "words" we address to our clients' bodies.
For instance, when the body begins to release and its natural pulsations emerge, we offer affirming vocalizations like "Yes, that's it, yes," much like gentle encouragement. This is to trust and affirm the body's inherent capacity to initiate its own process of change.
Moreover, we never employ negative, judgmental language towards the body, such as "Your XX is misaligned" or "Your knees are problematic." This is because we understand that such words can inadvertently "realize" or solidify the very discomfort they describe.
Indeed, in our bodywork classes, participants experience exercises where merely speaking to their own bodies induces noticeable changes, witnessing firsthand these astonishing and possibility-laden responses.
When words, thoughts, and the body align, we can unleash the full potential of our innate self-healing capacity and vitality.
Awakening to "Word Habits" and Liberating the Body
The word "ponkozu" illuminated how deeply our unconscious verbal habits can deplete the body's strength and vibrancy.
If you find yourself grappling with daily discomfort or persistent fatigue, take a moment to attune your awareness to the words you frequently utter. Then, quietly observe what impact these words have on your body.
And if those words tend to rigidify your body, perhaps it's time to deeply release your physical being at Unfolding Bodywork, and dedicate a moment to truly listen to the voice your body yearns to express?
By receiving the authentic messages from your body, you will undoubtedly be able to shift towards a lighter, more authentic way of living, where words, thoughts, and body are harmoniously aligned, and your own words will become a gentle compass guiding your physical being.
