Through connections forged in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City,
we had the honor of offering a Healing Touch session at Iwakura Kohitsuji Nursery School.
In my many years dedicated to bodywork,
I have often observed that a significant wellspring of various ailments
can be traced back to the intricate dynamics of parent-child relationships.
I, too, carry patterns of thought and emotional responses
that appear deeply influenced by my own parent-child connections.
Yet, releasing these imprints is not a journey that can be simply willed into being.
It often requires the subtle unfolding of personal growth, the nurturing of a supportive environment,
and the patient awaiting of a sacred moment for true clarity to emerge.
From the profound experience of touching my father's body in his hospital room,
up until the very eve of his passing from cancer,
I intimately came to know that through gentle touch, the body can soften,
and a deep sense of unease can gradually dissipate.
It is from these insights that I believe when parents of young children—mothers and fathers alike—
can inhabit a state of profound relaxation and inner harmony, their interactions with their children transform.
As a beautiful ripple effect, their children may then walk their own paths with unwavering confidence.
For this reason, for several years now, I have been offering nurturing support sessions and Healing Touch workshops
specifically for mothers and fathers, embracing their journey of parenthood.
In these current times, as the world grapples with the ripple effects of the Coronavirus,
many events have been cancelled or postponed indefinitely.
There was a moment of uncertainty, wondering if this very Healing Touch session could even proceed.
Yet, when we finally opened its doors, a generous embrace of participants graced us with their presence.
Amidst the stirring of the Coronavirus, as masks and toilet paper vanished from our cityscapes,
and an inescapable current of anxiety compelled many to remain still, unmoving,
I believe it is now, more than ever, that we are called to reconnect through touch, to gently ease
the tension from bodies held captive by worry, allowing them to truly soften and release.
During the session, parents gently placed their hands upon their children's bodies, and adults shared the gift of touch with one another,
creating a serene atmosphere where joyful voices interwove and resonated softly.
While there is often no resistance to parental touch when children are young,
as they grow into their unique selves, a sense of shyness or the stirrings of adolescence
can sometimes create a reluctance towards physical connection. Yet, I profoundly believe
it is deeply vital to impart from an early age that through touch, the body can beautifully soften and relax,
and anxieties or sorrows can gently begin their healing journey.
In my own home, I sometimes overhear my children offering to my wife, when she seems weary,
the tender question, "May I offer you a touch?"
Witnessing parents and children connect through this simple, profound touch,
I am always moved by its exquisite beauty.
The act of touching a body is the most elemental of gestures,
often overlooked, yet I envision that families and individuals who cherish
this profound value will be the architects of our future.
Contemplating this, I allow myself to muse upon the vision of "a world imbued with even greater tenderness."
